Residence of the Counts of Tirol

 

Tyrol Castle, one of the symbols of the area, now houses the South Tyrol Museum of Culture and Provincial History. In addition to the ancient well-preserved walls, you can admire a chapel with early Gothic frescoes, the oldest Tyrolean stained-glass windows in existence, the grandiose group of the Crucifixion as well as the oldest representation of the Tyrolean eagle. In the inner courtyard there is also a peaceful bar, where you can spend wonderful moments of quiet.

The Bird Rescue Center is located on the hill of Tyrol Castle, which welcomes wounded or distressed birds of prey, returning them to their natural habitat after having treated them. Another fundamental objective of the center is to inform the population about the protection of the environment, especially the protection of local birds. This message, communicated in a particularly insightful way through daily flight demonstrations with birds of prey, will remain etched in your memory.

A succession of dream landscapes

 

This route, surrounded by a wide variety of trees and shrubs, was donated in the '70s by Hans Norman Falkner, who chose Tirolo as his second home. The walk, one kilometre long, surrounds the village from the western edge, offering wonderful views of St. Peter, Tyrol Castle, Thurnstein Castle and the entire basin of Merano. Along this route, you can reach the Castle road, which leads to the famous Tyrol Castle and the district of St. Peter through a fascinating tunnel.

Known for its church and Thurnstein Castle

 

"Kronsbichl", as the hamlet of St. Peter is also called, extends from the western moat of Tyrol Castle to the "Grabbach" stream. The small church with Romanesque frescoes and early Gothic paintings is particularly evocative. It is one of the few churches with a cross vault, central hall and side aisles.
Thurnstein Castle is nestled in the vineyards on the slopes of Mount Mutspitze. Flanked by an imposing tower, it is connected to a 16th century residence.

The Grape Festival is part of the Merano tradition and celebrates the end of the harvest period. The highlight of this special weekend is the Sunday parade of bands and decorated floats through the streets of the centre.
